This is part 10 of a serial. All parts/chapters are listed on the blurbs page.

The first spell Ashleigh taught Yuhee was the lightning bold spell that Pei had used against her during their first encounter. It was a big step for her, but once she mastered it, it felt very natural. He was immensely impressed when Pei grabbed a metal lance and earthed it against the stone floor as a defence as Yuhee had done with the candelabra. There is a tendency for those interested in magic to focus so intently on the ethereal as to overlook the significance of its interaction with other aspects of existence.

“Do not do as I have sometimes done and lose sight of the bigger picture,” Ashleigh advised them. “Many a battle of magic has been won through wit and physical courage. Make use of these things.”

Yuhee and Pei saw immediately the wisdom of their teacher’s words, since  the outcome of their own battle had hinged on wit, despite somewhat of a mismatch in their magical abilities. Yuhee learned remarkably quickly, with Ashleigh as her tutor and Pei as a peer mentor. As she learned some defensive spells they were able to dual freely, and they spent a great deal of time practicing.

Pei had many duties as a ruler of the surrounding lands. She sent many reports back to her father, who ruled an empire of which her dominion was just a small part. Wherever possible, Pei would allow Yuhee to help with her duties, so as to learn of the affairs of state. Yuhee’s reading ability, though previously limited, improved as rapidly as did her magic. Since she was now paid a generous wage, as was her brother, who had decided to keep working as a servant at the castle, she allowed her self some spending money, with which she bought spell books and scrolls from traders at the market.

Within several moons, Yuhee gained the ability to study spells independently and learn them through reading an practice. With increasing frequency, she surprised Ashleigh and Pei with her new abilities. However, she progressed rather less rapidly with her physical training and, though her lung capacity and stamina increased quite a lot, she was still slightly pudgy. Her legs became a little stronger, but her fleshy arms changed very little.

One day, under Ashleigh’s instruction, Yuhee and princess Pei faced each other in a proper magical dual. The rules of the dual prohibited physical contact, but both were allowed to practice their offensive and defensive magic on one another freely until such time as one or other of them should give in to her opponent.

Ashleigh signalled the beginning of the dual with the drop of a handkerchief. As it hit the ground, shockwave erupted instantly from Yuhee’s wand and Pei was thrown back against the padded wall of their practice chamber. She was somewhat stunned, but as she staggered forward, she still had the presence of mind to cast a hasty defensive charm against the bolt of purple light that flew at her next. She regained her balance and quickly sidestepped the third spell. She quickly retaliated, sending several balls of light, but Yuhee easily blocked them and sent a fireball hurtling back at her, which scorched her hair as she ducked under it.

Before Pei cold straighten up, she was knocked back again by another invisible shockwave. The next fireball came so quickly she had to throw herself to the ground to avoid it. Before she cold move, the thick rugs that were laid on the floor to prevent injuries, rolled up around her, pinning her arms by her sides. Inside the carpet, she was rolled helplessly across the floor to Yuhee’s feet. The tip of Yuhee’s wand was at her throat in a moment. She gulped, gazing fondly up into Yuhee’s eyes. A smile spread across her face. Yuhee had won.

As Yuhee walked out through the castle gates, feeling tired but immensely satisfied and proud, the maid servant, Hui, came running after her and handed her a sealed letter. She thanked Hui and pocketed the letter, then trudged wearily home.

Yuhee was not really built for the physical aspects of her training, Pei noted as she watched from a window overlooking the training area. She wasn’t what you would call fat, but she was rather pudgy. She ran across the courtyard on her short, plump legs, her round buttocks wobbling slightly as each foot hit the ground. She lunged at a wooden fence that had been erected as an obstacle and half slid, half rolled over it, then tumbled to the ground on the other side and lay panting on her back on the grass, her face read and her brow sweating. After a long pause, she staggered unsteadily to her feet and jogged on. When she reached her trainer again, she leaned over with her hands on her knees, her back and chest heaving as she gasped for breath.

Pei wasn’t too worried about this though. What Yuhee lacked in physical fitness, she more than made up for with courage and resourcefulness. Pei was more interested to see how quickly she could learn magic under her new tutors.

Mr Leung, who was in charge of training Pei’s guards, was a competent officer and knew a great deal about physical fitness and discipline. Pei allowed him to continue unhindered for several hours, during which time Yuhee sweated and panted until her legs felt like jelly and her arms felt like lead. By the end of it she felt rather dizzy and could hardly stand.

Finally, a messenger approached and advised Mr Leung that they had done enough physical training for today. Yuhee was to wash in a private bathroom and Mr Leung was to report to princess Pei in her private drawing room.

“Well, how did Yuhee perform?” Pei asked him, gesturing toward a carved wooden chair.

“Well your highness, the truth is, her physical fitness leaves a lot to be desired as I’ve no doubt you could see from upstairs. However, one thing about her impressed me a great deal: whatever I asked her to do, she tried her hardest and never uttered a word of complaint. She is either very much used to obedience or very loyal to you, though at this point I cannot say which.”

Pei remembered the bold manner in which Yuhee had confronted her: it was not the way of one who is resigned to obedience. The smiled to herself. “Very well. I wanted you to test her today, but there is no need for her regular training to be so physically demanding. Though some exercise will be necessary, I would like you to focus on teaching her skills for combat, both with a staff and hand to hand. Once she has learned some basic skills, perhaps you may choose one or two other talented recruits as sparring partners.”

“Very well, your highness.”

“If any of our guests ask about her, tell them she is a regular guard who is receiving extra tuition because of special difficulties she is having. I trust your discretion in this matter, but it is important that they do not know the true purpose of her employment. If you have nothing else to tell me, then you may go.”

“Thank you, your highness.

Meanwhile, Yuhee had been escorted to a private bathroom, where Hui the maid servant helped her undress. She lowered herself into a large tub of steaming water and Hui gently sponged ever inch of her body and applied some scented ointments. After being buffed dry with a towel, she donned her newly purchased magical robe, picked up her wand and was shown by another servant to a large chamber with various magical devices, brewing potions and at one end a training area with targets set up for the practice of magic. There she was met by a grey haired wizard with foreign features wearing a dark blue robe and, to her surprise, princess Pei herself.

“Your highness,” she said, bowing low.

“Yuhee, you need not be so formal in this company, though you were right to do so as a precaution. This is Ashleigh, my mentor in the ways of magic. He will teach us both now. I believe you are some way behind in the way of combative spells, but I will learn from helping him teach you. Ashleigh is a trusted member of the household, so I have told him of our friendship. You have nothing to fear from him.

Yuhee bowed again, this time to Ashleigh. He returned the bow with a smile. Though his long hair and beard were of pale grey, his face looked young, with only a few wrinkles and those only showing when he smiled. His eyes were a pale greyish blue. Yuhee had never seen such eyes. She would almost swear she saw them twinkle.

Ashleigh drew a wand, twirled it skilfully and a little blue bird flew from the end, tweeted as it circled their heads, then disappeared through a window. “Draw your wands now, both of you, and we may begin.”

The Debt - 14-11-2011 14:50:00

This is part 8 of a serial. All parts/chapters are listed on the blurbs page .

Next morning, Yuhee awoke early, having gone to bed at sundown. Her brother was still asleep in the bunk above her, so she dressed in a plane linen skirt and tunic and slipped quietly out the door.

The market was in full swing when she wandered into that part of town a few minutes later. Traders were always early risers and many of them were crying out the prices and merits of their wares.

Most of the regulars there sold food and other essentials for making a life in a small town. However, at one end of the strip a caravan of colourfully dressed foreign merchants had set up camp. She decided they would be the best bet in terms of obtaining a new wand and robe. They didn’t seem to have very many customers and as she approached she was aware that several of them were watching her carefully.

At the entrance to a large tent, a wooden sign had been hung. It read, simply, ‘magic.’ Perhaps she was in luck. Cautiously, she bowed her head and stepped inside.

The light inside the tent was dim. The tent flap closed behind her. Trestle tables had been set up and various items were arranged on display. At the far end of the rectangular space was a table scattered with papers and open books and behind it sat a tall middle aged woman who was, despite the war weather, wrapped in a grey woollen shawl. Yuhee bowed to her and she nodded in acknowledgment but remained seated and said nothing. The woman regarded Yuhee intently as she looked about the tables for what she had come to buy.

There were several robes, though none seemed to be Yuhee’s size. She held up a particularly fine one of red silk with gold embroidery. She made as if to try it on, but an instinct she couldn’t quite place made her hesitate. It felt wrong.

“Be careful with that,” said the woman in the shawl, her voice low and slightly husky, “can’t you tell that’s cursed? Wear it and you will become feeble. It’s damned hard to remove, too.”

Yuhee hastily replaced the robe on the table. “I was wondering if you had anything in my size…”

“Well you are a little short, the husky voice continued. Perhaps I may have something though. What do you want it for?”

“Well, I am learning magic and I want a robe that will help me and protect me from danger. Actually, I don’t mind so much, as long as I look acceptable when I go to see my new… teacher,” she finished, remembering not to mention the princess.

“You are learning magic? Where is your wand?”

“I would like to buy a new one, actually. I lost it in… in a duel, recently.”

“No robes and no want? The lady in the shawl lowered her eyebrows. How am I to know that you are a real mage then? There is a code that prevents me selling these items to people who do not possess the wisdom to control them. First there must be a test!”

With that, the dim light faded even further and the shadows lengthened. The lady in the shawl’s form flickered for a moment then changed. A moment later, Yuhee was confronted by a tall and beautiful woman with large eyes and wavy brown hair. She woman stepped around the table and approached. As she drew close, she smiled and her smile revealed sharp pointed fangs.

Yuhee took a step back, but the woman rushed forward and held her. A strong hand twisted her pudgy little left arm behind her back and the other slapped her right ear a couple of times, then gripped her hair and held her head back.

The pain in her arm and hair and the ringing in her ear made concentrating difficult. Yuhee tried to think of all the things she had heard about in stories that could harm vampires, but none of them seemed to be available to her. She tried to summon one of the stakes that held up the tent, but that was too complex a spell to accomplish without a wand.

She tried to struggle, twisting from side to side, but the arms that held her were strong. She pushed forward, forcing her captor to take a step back, but the long legs were hard to set off balance. Yuhee felt a knee strike her abdomen, which she clutched with her free hand, leanind forward. Then she was thrown to the ground and the vampire was on top of her, gripping her again, its teeth descending toward her exposed throat. It was getting close. Those long legs gripped her about the waist and the arms pinned her. The only thing she could move was her head. With an effort, she raised it and head butted the vampire’s nose, then fell back, almost defeated.

Something warm dripped on to Yuhee’s face. She opened her eyes. To her amazement, the vampire’s nose as bleeding. Something was wrong there. Vampires didn’t bleed. As realisation dawned, she became aware of the warmth of the body on top of her. There was hope after all. Those arms were strong, but this was not the cold immortal grip of the undead. This was a human. She struggled with renewed hope and managed to free a hand.

Yuhee grabbed a lock of the wavy brown hair and pulled the human’s face close, then sunk her own teeth into the woman’s cheek. The woman cried out. Yuhee let go of her hair, clamped her hand over the woman’s full breast and pushed. The woman released her grip and rolled off. Yuhee lunged on top and placed one hand over each of those full breasts, squeezing with all her strength.

The woman’s body writhed and struggled beneath Yuhee, but not with as much strength as her grip during their first contact had led her to expect. As the struggle continued, Yuhee felt certain that the woman’s strength was decreasing.

Allowing herself a moment to regain her concentration, Yuhee focused energy through her hands until they burned with fire. The woman screamed with pain and gradually began to transform. Yuhee felt the lithe, firm body between her legs become softer and les definite. Within a minute, she was straddling not the beautiful exotically dressed vampire, but the grey haired, middle aged woman in the shawl.

She relaxed and allowed the magic to dissipate. “Well done,” said the woman, a faint glimmer in her eye, “you’ve passed the test.” Her voice was still husky, but as she said this it was not without a note of cordiality.

Yuhee hesitated for a long moment. “So, could you please show me your wares then?” she asked.

“Yes, I believe you have proven yourself worthy of them,” agreed the woman, “but it would be a lot easier if you’d let go of my breasts and get off me. Yuhee suddenly realised that she was still holding on. The breasts felt less firm now and were covered by the shawl. She released them and got to her feet, then let the woman support herself on her arm as she got up too.

“Sorry. I…” Yuhee began apologetically.

“Not at all, not at all. It isn’t often anyone touches me there and I have to get my jollies somehow,” she cackled. “Here, try these on. They have some protective magic imbued and are of fine quality.”

She handed Yuhee some silk robes and a pair or fine silk trousers. Yuhee undressed and put them on. She felt warm and protected. The effect was subtle, but she felt somehow more confident as well. The robes were of dark green silk with runes embroidered around the collar and sleeve cuffs. The fit was perfect.

“I like them,” said Yuhee, “they make me feel…”

“Ah, now that is another benefit. I have a little spell of my own devising which helps with that. I’ve seen many a talented mage fail to cast a spell because of self doubt,” the lady explained. She unrolled a roll of cloth to reveal an assortment of wands. “Now,” she said, “in order to decide which wand is right for you, I will need to tell your fortune.”

She laid out a series of cards, then shuffled, them and had Yuhee choose some, then laid out some more, then thought for a while.

“Yuhee, your future is complex and difficult to foresee. You will face many trials and struggles and the outcomes are not certain. There is a chance of great triumph, but also of an early demise. You will experience feelings of affection and pleasure, but also, I’m afraid, a great deal of pain. Your life will be shaped and guided by a great love for someone you have met only recently, though you have been aware of them for some time. I believe there is only one wand among my collection that is suitable for you, though I cannot guarantee that any will be able to save you from all the dangers you will face. Take this.

The wand she presented to Yuhee was long and made of a dark, reddish coloured timber, with inlays of pale teak forming a pattern of entwining roses. It was not the most spectacular wand in the collection, but when Yuhee took it she felt it connect instantly with the magic that flowed through her hand. The wand felt balanced and purposeful in a way that her old wand never had. She held it with both hands and bowed and the woman bowed back, smiling.

As Yuhee handed over some coins and jewels, the tent flaps opened and she turned to leave.

“What is your name?” she asked over her shoulder.

“It’s Hilda,” said the woman, “I am from Kalidad, a city many days travel to the west of here. Look for me when you travel that way and I may have more items for you.”

Yuhee thanked Hilda and bid her farewell, then made her way outside.

Paying for the wand and the robes cost most of the money and jewels that were in the small bag Yuhee had been given. She hid the rest in an inner pocket of her robes and went to have an early lunch at the inn, where she sat at an outdoor table shaded by an oak tree until it was time to head to the castle to begin her training.

Yuhee's brother Shin was surprised to be summoned to princess Pei's private drawing room. He followed Hui, the maid servant with some trepedation. The three days he had spent working at the castle had been onerous. Though he had been treated kindly by the other servants, his only encounter with princess Pei had been a brief audience for the reading of his sentence. He had not been called on to speak and after the sentence had been read he had been sent to begin it with a dismissive motion of her eyes. Her face, to him, had appeared cold and impassive and he assumed his next encounter would involve some sort of worsening of his lot, though he had no idea why, since he had done his best to learn his new duties.

Shin reflected on this as he ascended the spiral stone staircase. He was a fresh faced ninteen year old, though his life of manual labour showed in his strong, leathery hands and his arm muscles, which stood out on his light frame. Despite his fears, he was determined to remain calm and unperterbed. He had never travelled beyond the next town and was not particularly worldly wise, but he was proud and self concious.

Upon entering the drawing room he stared in amazement. There was his own big sister, Yuhee, sipping tea and having an apparently friendly and cordial conversation with his captor. They both stopped talking and looked up when they saw him. The small table where they sat by the window was littered with documents and maps and a goose quill standing in a bottle. Pei and Yuhee both smiled, Pei's smile friendly but slightly mysterious, Yuhee's a broad grin. Good news then?

Pei beckoned and Shin sat opposite them, wondering if he should say anything. He bowed to her instead.

"Your sister has a surprise for you," Pei said quietly, glancind at Yuhee.

"Yes," said Yuhee, "I have come to tell you that you are free! You can come home with me and you don't have to work here any more unless you want to."

Shin stared in disbeleif. Could she be serious? Yet here she was, having an informal conversation with the princess. Here he was, sitting at a table with her instead of mucking out her stables. A grin began to spread across his face, then he hesitated as a shocking thought struck him. "But how...  you're not going to take my place are you? I won'd let you do that! I'd rather work here till I die!"

"Not exactly..." Yuhee began.

"I have forgiven your debt," Pei interjected, before Shin could protest, "Yuhee is free to go as well, but I have also offered her a well paid job and I beleive she has accepted. She may resign at any time if she chooses and she will still live with you and the rest of her family, though sometimes her new job may require some travelling. I have already outlined it for her in brief. She will begin training tomorrow. You must help by waking her up and accompanying her on her walk as far as the gates. Will that be okay?"

"Yes, your majesty, I will look after her. She won't be late. Thank you your majesty."

"You must address me as 'your highness,'" Pei said sternly, but then she smiled. "The servants are waiting to serve our meal. I won't delay them further."

Taking that as their cue, Hui carefully cleared away their papers and several other servants entered with trays and laid out what looked and smelled to Shin and Yuhee like the most magnificent feast they had ever seen, though naturally it was no more than the usual daily fare of the castle. With plenty of encouragment from the princess, Shin and Yuhee ate until their stomachs could hold no more. Then, an hour or so later, they were escourted to the servants' door and made their way home in the hot afternoon sun, feeling very glad and contented indeed, despite some aches and pains, Shin's from his work and Yuhee's from her battle of the previous evening. That battle certainly wouldn't be her last, but now at least she knew that princess Pei would be fighting with her, not against her. That was a very comforting thought.

The Debt - 04-11-2011 13:57:00
Ja-nie was a brave warrior

Ja-nie was a brave warrior. She had been on the road for several years now, seeking her fortune and fending off all kinds off bandits, kobolds and even the occasional reanimated skeleton without too much difficulty. She was quite used to the adventuring life now. Her confidence was such that when the mayor of the town where she was staying approached her in the inn and asked her to help rid the town reservoir of a monster, she was only too eagre to accept. She went upstairs and woke La-nia, her travelling companion and together they gathered together the various items and equipment that they planned to take with them.

Ja-nie was a warrior. She had leaned to fight with an axe since she was a child, since it was also a tool and cost little enough for her poor father to possess. Since she had been travelling had managed to save up some gold from the pockets of her fallen foes and she now possessed a short battle axe with a basic enchantment enhanced the damage it dealt a little. She wore a chain mail tunic, chain mail shorts and thigh high boots with metal plates to protect her calves. She was in the market for a decent helmet, but had none she quite liked to wear as yet. On her left hand she wore her most valuable possession, a powerful ring of protection that tended to ward off or deflect many of the nastier blows she would otherwise have suffered. She had been lucky enough to find it on the finger of an apparently rich but ill fated mage who she had found half eaten by wolves.

La-nia carried only a wooden club, not approving of axes in general. She drew on her close collection with the natural world as a source of power and magic as well as for inspiration. She wore a warm green travelling cloak, dark green leggings and a grey tunic of fine woven wool. She had been on the road for considerably longer than Ja-nie and possessed far greater wisdom. She was also rather older, being at least thirty as compared to Ja-nie’s twenty three or so years. She regarded her young companion with a great deal of affection, but sometimes she felt a little concerned by the number of well meaning quests they were taking on. Nature had ways of maintaining it’s own order and balance. She imagined that society should do the same if only it were left to it’s own devices. This made her feel inclined to go away along into the forests or over the mountains for long periods of time, but always a sense of concern prompted her to go and track down her young warrior friend and help her out of whatever predicament she was in.

Once the two companions had made their preparations it was getting near sunrise, so they made their way quietly out into the town and followed the path to the small lake that served as the water supply for all who lived there.

            “It’s a nice place,” observed Ja-nie.

“Yes, very nice. You’d never think of it as a place of evil where people have been dying. I wonder why.”

“Well, there’s only one way to find out!” Ja-nie called over her shoulder, already running around the edge of the lake. “Follow me!”

La-nia was reluctant, but followed anyway, mostly so they were not separated. The two of them jogged around the reservoir, hopping from stone to stone. They had gone most of the way round when they came to the stone wall that dammed up the water at the eastern end.

“Oh, for Freyr’s sake, we won’t find anything rushing about like this,” La-nia implored. “Can’t we just have a proper look around? This is the area where you said the two boys disappeared.”

Ja-nie stopped. “Okay then, let’s have a look around here.” With that she laid down her bundle of equipment and began pacing about.

La-nia stood still. She looked carefully about her. There was a dark green cap down by the water’s edge. Picking it up, she saw that it was quite small. A child’s cap then.

Ja-nie, come and look at this,” she urged. There were marks on the ground as though something had been dragged along. They led through the mud and were just visible below the surface of the water.

“You don’t think they fell in do you?” Ja-nie asked. “It looks a bit slippery. That’d be an awful thing to have to tell their mother and father.”

“It doesn’t look very slippery where the marks start, up here, La-nia said, pointing. “Anyway, that couldn’t account for all the disappearances. There must be something else.”

She sat down on a rock and looked out over the water. Ja-nie did the same for a few minutes, then picked up a hand full of small pebbles and began to throw them into the water. She tried to make them skim across the surface, but she wasn’t very good at it. After she had done this a few times, a stream of bubbles began to appear on the surface, right where the last few stones had landed. The bubbled moved towards them until they were appearing right near the bank. “That’s interesting,” she mused.

They both stood up and walked slowly towards the water, peering to try and see what was below the service, but the bright sunlight made it impossible. Ja-nie went right down to the water’s edge. She picked up a large stone and despite La-nia advising her against it, she hurled it at the spot where the bubbles were rising.

Nothing happened for a moment, then something stirred at the waters edge. Something long and thin snaked its way out of the water, moving from side to side and quivering at the tip as though feeling its way. It touched the side of Ja-nie’s boot. She reached over her shoulder and drew her axe.

“I wouldn’t harm it if I were you,” La-nia warned. It just seems to be checking us out. Ja-nie kept still. The tip of the tentacle raised and it began to make its way up her leg. As it reached her bare thigh, she could stand it no longer. She brought the axe down just in front of her feet and severed the tentacle.

The reaction was instant. As the tip of the tentacle fell to the ground, till writhing, another thirty or so emerged as one from the water and wound themselves around every part of her body. Tentacles entwined her limbs, her head, and her neck. Some of them slid under her mail, feeling slimy and cold. Tips of tentacles probed every orifice of her body and she began to scream until a rather thick one thrust itself into her mouth. Then, all at once, the monster retreated into the depths of the lake and she disappeared with it below the surface.

Short Story - 02-11-2011 15:35:18

This is part 6. See Blurbs page  for a list of chapters.

Yuhee and Pei were both very tired after their battle and so they slept together till the sun was high in the sky. Light streamed in through the open double doors that led to the balcony and with it came a warm, gentle breeze.

The first to awake was Pei, who dreamily inhaled the fragrance of Yuhee’s hair and neck as she recalled the events of the night before. Proud as she was of being a princess and ruling over the region on behalf of her father, the king, it had, she reflected, tended to distance her from people. Her servants and the wizard she hired to teach her were nice enough to her, but they were always careful around her and she never felt that they were her friends. Here was someone different. Yuhee had challenged her authority. Most people who did that were punished severely. Yuhee would be different.

Pei reached her small hand down beneath the covers and gently stroked Yuhee’s soft round hip and buttock. Yuhee was awake now, but kept her eyes closed. A smile broadened across every part of her face and her pudgy cheeks reddened a little as Pei’s lips and tongue began to play about her nipple. She moaned softly as that tender, silky soft hand that was stroking her buttock made its way gradually around her thigh and began to touch her clitoris. Gradually her excitement built. Pei’s hands were deft and dexterous. Yuhee’s breathing and heart rate increased with every movement and insertion and she helped by touching herself until she could hold it in no longer and let out a cry of pleasure as her body shook with orgasm.

It took some time for her breathing and heart rate to return to normal. She and Pei still clung together in the bed between the silk sheets. Finally, Yuhee gave Pei a tender kiss on the neck. “Thank you, your highness,” she said with a smile. They both giggled a little, but then Pei looked at her thoughtfully and said, “when we’re alone together, just the two of us, please just call me Pei. I would like that. You will be the only one.”

For a few minutes there was silence as Yuhee considered the implications of this. Was she to meet the princess like this regularly from now on? A few hours ago she had been a commoner and knew only important nobles were allowed even to speak with her at court. Her life was changing faster than she could comprehend. “Pei,” she whispered, hardly daring to utter such a name, though she had known it all her life. “It… would be an honour,” she stuttered, almost reverting to formality.

“There’s no need to say that. You are someone very special. I can see that now.”

“Your magic is far greater than mine,” Yuhee protested. A day ago she would never have dared to believe the princess would ever think highly of her. Now though… now here she was in her arms. She was no longer a high and mighty figure seen from afar in an elegant robe surrounded by attendants. She was a beautiful, young, sweet human being.

“I think you may need more training with that, but you have talent,” Pei reassured her, “you are resourceful and quick witted, but most importantly of all, you are brave and your motivations are pure. I have met few people like you. I’m sorry we have met under such difficult circumstances. I hope we can both forgive whatever wrongs we have done each other. As a sign of good will, I will forgive your brother’s debt and I will not force you to work for me if you do not wish to. However, if you choose to, I will pay you handsomely. Of course I would rather welcome you here as my friend, but there would be an outcry among the nobility if I openly befriended someone with no title and that could lead to further complications and difficulties. Also, I may need your help and you may benefit from mine, since choosing to work for me will end any financial difficulties your family might have. You are free to make a decision on this matter and I will do my best to help you either way.” Pei looked into Yuhee’s eyes as she said it and her tone was almost beseeching.

Yuhee hesitated. She had no idea what kind of work she would be doing or how her life was about to change. She felt a thrill of excitement. She nodded. “When do I start?” she managed.

“Well, your brother will be downstairs in the kitchens helping to prepare lunch. I think today, after we have eaten, you will probably want to take him home and explain the good news to him. There are several nobles staying here at the castle, so I think it would be best if we had lunch in my private drawing room under the pretext of having a meeting to discuss business. I will instruct my butler that that is what the nobles must be told. I will also have them send your brother to join us and to make sure we are not disturbed. You and he may then leave together. I hope you can return here tomorrow, two hours after sun up, to begin your training. I will make the necessary arrangements and send someone to meet you outside the main gates.”

Yuhee took this in and nodded. Their clothes were damaged, but Pei called a trusted maid servant named Hui, who brought them both fine silk trousers and another resplendent mage robe for Pei, since Yuhee’s, though plane, was still alright to ware. “This one has a charm of fire resistance,” Pei mused, “I wish I’d had it on last night. I have several slightly painful burns on my back and neck.” Hui brought some cooling ointment and rubbed it into the burns.

“Now, before we go to lunch,” said Pei, I know you will need a new wand and I suggest you also purchase a new robe, since I will want you looking your best when you attend the castle tomorrow. For today, you will just have to leave as you are and hope the nobles don’t see you. I can’t stand them, but they can be quite influential and my father has instructed me to maintain good relations with them. Here.” She opened a draw of the desk and took out a small green linen bag. She it out with both hands and when Yuhee took it she was surprised by its weight. “Some jewellery of mine, worth around three thousand gold coins. There isn’t anything in there distinctive enough to arouse suspicion, but do be careful and don’t cash it in all in one place,” she explained.

Then together, attended by Hui the maid servant, they made their way to the private drawing room several floors below.

“I give up!” Pei’s thin voice whispered between sobs. You have the power to make magic without a wand. You have defeated me. I will honour the bargain we made. Just, please touch me a little longer and let me cum.”

There was a note of genuine pleading in her voice. Yuhee could tell she was genuinely ready to honour their deal. She let go of both breasts and slowly slid her body down until, kneeling on the floor with her chest on the bed, her head was level with Pei’s loins. They tasted good. She gently but persistently stimulated Pei’s clitoris with the tip of her tongue and reached up to gently work her nipples with her fingers.

As Pei’s voice rose in time with Yuhee’s tongue, she began to let it slide in and out of her moist vulva. Yuhee could feel the muscles in the thigh beside her ear tense, then relax in time with her licking. Pei’s pale little hands touched and stimulated her clitoris in time with the licking too. In between gasps of pleasure, to Yuhee’s surprise, Pei uttered her name, “Yuhee… Yuhee… YuheeeeEE!” and finally every muscle in her slender little body tensed and she shook and with the climax of her pleasure, before gradually settling down into a series of satisfied little moans.

Once Pei had relaxed, Yuhee slid out of her silk trousers and they both lay together under the covers in an embrace, their legs intertwined and their chests together and kissed and sighed with contentment for some time, then gradually drifted into a sleep filled with happy dreams of each other.

The Debt - 01-11-2011 09:33:00

Natalia was from a poor family. She lived with her mother, as her father had been killed by marauding ogres while working his fields when she was still a child. Her mother was old and frail, so it was up to Natalia to tend the animals and work the fields while her mother made preserves and cheeses and other processed items in the house. Though they were poor, the land they owned was fertile and, despite the hard work, they were not unhappy.

On market days, Natalia would walk into the nearby town pushing a hand cart and sell their produce to the wown's people and passers by. She was well known in the town. Though she was not especially beautiful, she had an endeering smile and was kind to children, so the local people paid her fair prices. All the local people, that is, except for Estella, the daughter of the town mayor, and her maid servant Nancy, who accompanied her wherever she went.

Natalia had no idea why, but Estella made hurtful remarks and played jokes on her at every opportunity. She had done this since they had been children and Natalia had always hoped she would grow out of it, but now, she was a grown women in her twenties and she hadn't changed a bit. Whenever Natalia had tried to stand up to her, Nancy the maid servant, who was of around the same age and had grown up with them in the villiage, would hold poor Natalia's arms behind her back and let Estella torture her as she pleased. Nancy was a little shorter than Natalia, but her arms were strong from her work as a maid and she was rather more heavily built. As they would choose their timing so that nobody else would catch them at it, Natalia often found herself helpless and completely at their mercy. Estella would slap and pinch and scratch her until she cried and begged to be released, then Nancy would throw her on the ground and there they would leave her, dirty, crying and alone.

As Natalia was pushing her cart home from the market one sunny afternoon, she caught a glymps of the two of them in the distance. They saw her too and hurried into a barn by the road side ahead. Estella was carrying a short leather horse whip in her hand. Natalia knew they would be waiting to surprise her there, but there was no other road home and she needed to complete her chores by nightfall. Slowly, she pushed her cart towards the barn, a feeling of dread growing in her heart. The unfairness of it all and the dread brought tears to her eyes, but still she went on. She had to be brave.

As Natalia approached the barn, she could just see the side door open a crack as Estella watched her approach, but as she glanced at it the crack closed. Natalia parked her cart beside the door and, just before it burst open, she hurried around the side of the barn, her feet hardly making a dound on the cropped grass.

Estella and Nancy burst out from the barn door, ready to begin harassing their victim, but she was nowhere to be seen. They eyed her empty cart. "She must have gone around the back, the coward. Let's go after her."

Quickly, Natalia climbed the ladder up the back of the barn and into the hay loft. She pulled the ladder up after her as quickly and silently as she could, then lay down in the hay, peering out through the square opening through which she had climbed. She saw Estella and Nancy walk past, then back again. Then they stopped. Estella pointed: "You go around that way, I'll go this way. She can't keep going in circles then," she ordered. The two of them set off in opposite directions around the barn.

Natalia hurried down the inside ladder from the hay loft and opened the side door. Estella reached it first, having walked a shorter distance, and seeing it open, she hurried inside, calling "She's in here! Quickly!"

Before Nancy could get there, however, Natalia slammed the door shut behind her and drew the heavy wooden bolt. "Now your alone," she said quietly. "Perhaps now I can teach you some manners."

Estella made a rush for the bolt, but Natalia had already walked several paces toward her and tripped her with her leg. She fell face down, her clean pink cheaks and white dress picking up streaks of brown dirt. Natalia dragged her by the ankle across the earthern floor and into the centre of the barn, her skirts lifting to reveal white bloomers. Natalia yanked these off and tossed them into a trough of dirty water. She did the same with the shiny leather shoes and white socks. When Estella struggled or tried to get up, she kicked her hard from behind with the tow of her hard leather boot.

Next, she pulled Estella's skirts up over her head and looped a piece of twine that happened to be hangingin on the wall around them, tying them like the neck of a bag over her head. Estella was helpless like this, unable to see and her arms trapped. Natalia set about tormenting the naked lower half of her body. She sat on she small girl's midriff and was ablt to slap and pinch and scratch to her heart's content. She was not a mean person, but revenge felt sweet and soon Estella's proud, haughty little voice had been replaced with shrill cries of agony, intersperced with wailing and begging for mercy and bandgs and crashes as Nancy tried to kick the door down. Natalia was taller and stronger than Estella and was very fit because of all the hard work she did, whereas Estella was rather spoiled, which accounted for both her feeble attempts to struggle and the lack of maturity that had led to her predicament.

When she had contented herself, Natalia opened the door. Nancy made as if to attack and then hesitated. Natalia was striding towards her purposfully. She stepped past her, took up her cart and continued home in time to feed the animals and muck out their stalls.

The next day, Nancy came alone and knocked at the door. Natalia was ready for a fight and carried a pitch fork when she went to greet her, but Nancy merely looked sad and hung her head. "I'm really sorry," she said. "I was a fool to always follow her around and help her tease you like I did. Anyway, I don't work for her any more. She said she couldn't stand to be around someone who had seen her mumiliated like that, even though I tried to offer her my sympathy. Anyway, I told her I couldn't stand to be around someone who was a bully and she deserved it. I'm sorry, but I have nowhere else to go. Could you forgive me enough to let me stay here for the night?"

"I will," said Natalia, who was afterall a very kind sort, "but tell me one thing: do you know why Estella always hated me so much?"

"Oh, I thought everyone knew that," said Nancy in surprise. "She hated you because ever since we were little she's fancied Tom, the baker's boy, but he was never interested since he was always admiring you."

"Oh, but why would he want me? She's much more beautiful and her family have money."

"Yes, but you have a different kind of beauty that not even your enemies can deny," explained Nancy, "you have a good heart and a smile that makes people feel warm inside. If you want the boy, he's yours. Nice lad. Makes a good enough living too. Will you marry him?"

"Well..." Natalia pondered, "I'm really not sure, since he's hardly ever spoken to me except to buy things at the market, though he was always very friendly. I'm happy as I am and I have no need for a husband, but I will get to know him a little and if he is as nice as you say, then he may be in with a chance. In the mean time, you may live here with me and my mother, if you like. You will be very welcome. We will share what we have: our home, our living and the work to keep them."

The End

Short Story - 31-10-2011 06:03:00

This is part 4. See Blurbs page  for a list of chapters.

Yuhee was feeling confident now. Though she had little life experience, she could feel what it meant to be aroused. She smiled to herself a little. Still keeping their breasts in contact, she slid her silk clad legs across and let her thigh rest against Pei’s moist crotch, inducing another little moan of pleasure.

Pei hesitated. Every part of her burned with desire to reach her climax. Her heart beat so hard that it sent quivers through her nipple where it pressed against Yuhee’s. She wanted with all her heart to give up the fight and surrender to the pleasure. She opened her mouth to speak, then closed it again. Something part of her mind was holding her back, making her hesitate: her pride. Pei was a princess and a powerful mage. She could have both, she told herself. She could win, then Yuhee would pleasure her as a paid servant. The conviction grew. She focused her mind.

Pei’s soft, graceful hands stroked Yuhee’s bare back for a moment, then hesitated, one over her left kidney, the other behind her right shoulder. The hands felt warm and tender at first, but in an instant the warmth drained away and a cold, icy pang shot through Yuhee’s back. Yuhee writhed and cried out in pain. Her heavy body still made it hard for Pei to breath and the motion of that plump thigh against her crotch made it hard to concentrate, but she managed to keep up the spell for over a minute.

For Yuhee, the pain was excruciating. She tried to pull away, but the pain was excruciating. She felt as though icicles were driving through her flesh. Even when it was over, she continued to shiver. She tried to pull away, but Pei’s arms still held her, with nails digging into the soft flesh of her back.

The hand that held her shoulder suddenly slipped between them and grasped her breast. Pei summoned all her concentration again. This time she focussed the spell through just one hand: the hand that held Yuhee’s breast. The pain was doubly intense this time and Yuhee gave a piercing scream that lasted until her lungs had completely emptied, then all she could do was gasp for breath as tears dripped from her eyes.

The spell didn’t last quite as long this time. Pei was tired. Magic without a wand was much, much harder to summon. As the pain of the spell subsided, Yuhee threw her weight to one side and rolled off Pei.

They both got to their feet, breathing heavily and both more than a little unsteady. They both charged and locked arms, pushing against one another like a rugby scrum. Their strength was quite evenly matched, but Yuhee’s weight gave her a slight advantage and she forced Pei back, little by little. Pei focused magical energy through her hands where they touched Yuhee, but Yuhee swung her sideways and she fell into the bed, face down.

Yuhee grabbed the cuffs of Pei’s silk trousers and pulled sharply. They slid off and now Pei was completely nude. Her buttocks were small and rounded, complimenting the gentle curve of her slender narrow hips and her labia glistened with moisture. Yuhee threw herself on top, her full weight knocking the breath out of Pei’s slight figure. She stood astride her and threw punch after punch at Pei’s head, which was knocked back and forth like a punching bag.

Yuhee slid her soft, chubby hands under Pei’s heaving chest and grasped both breasts. She had no idea if it would work, but she muttered the words of the only fire spell she knew and concentrated it through those hands. It took a few moments to have any effect, but gradually a feeling of heat and burning enveloped Pei’s breasts and filled her entire chest. The pain built and intensified and despite her pride she soon began to scream and cry. “Stop, stop! Please stop!” she cried. Yuhee could feel every muscle in Pei’s  body tighten as she writhed beneath her. Those firm round buttocks writing beneath her crotch made her feel so aroused she could barely concentrate and an excuse to stop was welcome. “Why?” she asked.

The Debt - 30-10-2011 10:24:00

This is part 3. See Blurbs page  for a list of chapters.

Pei didn’t answer, except to mutter some incantations. The flames subsided a little. She struggled out of the burning remains of her robe, revealing pale bare breasts, larger and more shapely than Yuhee’s. She still wore pale blue close fitting silk trousers. Her right hand still held the silver wand. She looked up at Yuhee and her expression turned to fury.

The silver wand waved and Yuhee staggered back against the wall. A fireball struck the wall just as she sprang aside and ran back through the doors. She tripped over the candelabra, landing flat on her chest, pain rippling through her breasts and belly, despite the carpets.

Pei was on her feet now and stood over Yuhee as she rolled onto her back. There would be no dodging the next fireball. It flew from Pei’s silver wand. “No!” cried Yuhee, concentrating all her concentration through the wand at the fireball. It was stopped, as if by an invisible barrier, then burst in mid air, sending sparks in all directions. A spark landed on Pei’s bare breast and the momentary pain made her drop her guard. Yuhee grabbed the candelabra and swung it at the side of Pei’s calves. Pei toppled to the floor.

The silver wand was up in an instant and another fireball shot past Yuhee’s head, bursting against the stone ceiling. Then she swung the candelabra again. It caught the silver wand and sent it cart wheeling over the balcony. She tried to regain her balance and take another swing, but Pei had already rolled against her feet and held her legs together, so she toppled to the floor.

Pei was on her in an instant, straddling her pudgy belly and slapping at her face and chest. However, she still had her wand. She sent the chair from the desk flying and it clipped Pei’s forehead, drawing blood, before it shattered against the wall.

Pei dug her knees into Yuhee’s soft, writing belly, but had to shelter her face from a succession of small flying objects. “Don’t you know any other magic?” she accused. “At least I have a wand,” Yuhee gasped. Pei was light, but her weight was concentrated and she squeezed Yuhee’s sides with her knees, making it hard to breath. Yuhee was running out of breath. She was also short of objects to levitate.

She hesitated and Pei made a grab for the wand. Yuhee tried to hold it out of reach, but Pei soon had hold of it and twisted it between her thumb and fingers, flinging it over the balcony. Then she resumed her assault on Yuhee’s face and breasts.

Yuhee wanted to close her eyes and cower, but she held her nerve. Without wands, she was no longer up against powerful magic. The beginnings of real hope began to dawn within her, despite the stinging pain. She swung her fist at the side of Pei’s bare belly and felt the relaxed muscle give way. Pei leaned forward, grabbing her side. Yuhee wriggled and bucked, trying to throw her off, but Pei’s arms, slender but strong, wrapped around Yuhee’s head and her legs wrapped around her plump belly, squeezing and smothering.

A bare nipple pressed into Yuhee’s nostril. Flesh covered her mouth and her ears were muffled by Pei’s arms. She bucked harder, raising her belly and Pei’s feet entwined and interlocked behind her back. The squeezing was excruciating and, unable to breath, Yuhee felt sure she would pass out at any moment. With a final effort, she thrust her head upward and the nipple popped into her mouth. Her teeth closed on it like the jaws of a vice and, despite her ears being muffled, she heard Pei give a shrill whimper.

No longer wishing to have her nipple bitten, Pei tried to draw back, releasing Yuhee’s head and trying to pry open her jaws. The pain was mixed with a strange burning, tingling feeling, which she didn’t want to end, but she was afraid those teeth would do serious damage.

Pei punched the side of Yuhee’s head repeatedly, whimpering and gasping in pain. Yuhee continued to punch her pale, slender belly. She tensed her muscles, but they were solid blows and she became short of breath. Yuhee was short of breath too and they both panted and gasped together. Pei could feel Yuhee’s soft belly expanding and contracting against her crotch. It felt warm and surprisingly nice.

Finally Yuhee let go of the nipple to take a breath. Pei pulled back, sitting up and had to put a hand down to one side to stop herself overbalancing. Yuhee grabbed her other hand and twisted it behind her back, then, with her other hand, pulled the curtain of black shining hair down and to the left until Pei’s head was almost at ground level.

Pei still had hold of Yuhee with her legs, but was on her side now. Yuhee twisted her arm tighter behind her back. Then, letting go of Pei’s hair, she grabbed and twisted the other nipple. Once again Pei whimpered. The pain was nothing compared to the biting, but the burning and tingling was increasing and her heart began to beet faster.

Yuhee was still panting and short of breath, but she managed to roll over until Pei was on her back and she was between her thighs. She let go with both hands and punched Pei’s bare belly with all her strength. She pushed and prodded at Pei’s legs, but they still squeezed about her belly. Finally, she probed her fingers into the sensitive areas of Pei’s crotch. It felt moist through the silk trousers and Pei let out a little moan of pleasure, relaxing momentarily, then squeezing again.

Yuhee’s pudgy little fingers slid down the front of the blue silk trousers and probed deeper and deeper inside Pei. There were more moans of pleasure and Pei’s legs relaxed even more. Suddenly, Yuhee dug with her fingernails. Pei cried out and her legs opened. Yuhee thrust the legs aside, then straddled one, holding it between her soft thighs. The other, she held aside with one hand while she caressed and stroked inside Pei’s trousers with the other. Pei became more and more excited, moaning in time with Yuhee’s stroking. Then Yuhee stopped.

She leaned over Pei, straddling her slender waist and pinning her arms beside her head. “Have I won?”

“Please, don’t stop,” begged Pei. “It feels so good.”

Yuhee felt good too. The bare slender belly touching her crotch through her silk trousers was making her begin to feel moist. She cast off her robe and pressed her little round breasts against Pei’s. “I will finish, if you will give up and concede defeat. Otherwise, I will make sure you lose anyway.”

The Debt - 28-10-2011 20:10:00

This is part 2. See Blurbs page  for a list of chapters.

The handkerchief fell slowly. Both women watched it as a slight gust of wind lifted it, turned it over, then brought it down suddenly edge first. A hum and crackle brought Yuhee’s attention back to the silver wand in Pei’s hand in time to see lightning ark across the room and strike her. Then there was nothing but blinding pain.

Yuhee fell back against the door, which had closed behind her. There was a moment’s pause, then another flash and more pain. It was so hard to think with all this pain.

In the next pause, Yuhee caught a glimpse of something and staggered to her feet. The third bolt of lightning hit her and she staggered back, her whole body writhing in agony, but most of all her head, yet she remained standing. As the pain subsided, she made a swiping motion with her own wand and the tall silver candelabra in the corner by the bed flew to her. She caught it with her left hand and held it out just as the fourth bold of lightning came arcing toward her. She grounded the candlestick on a bare patch of floor and the lightning danced harmlessly down it. Then she charged forward.

There was just enough time for another lightning bolt to shoot forth from the silver wand. This time Yuhee thrust the candelabra against the stone ceiling and the effect was the same. Now it would be her turn to attack. But how?

Yuhee knew how to levitate and manipulate objects. That was one of the first things she had learned. A series of objects flew toward Pei, who diverted most of them with a swipe of her wand, but a heavy book from the desk struck her forehead and she staggered back through the double doors onto a large balcony. Yuhee concentrated on Pei and pushed. Pei momentarily continued back toward the rail, but quickly spoke a counter spell and was easily able to resist Yuhee’s next attempt. In return she used the same spell send Yuhee crashing sideways into the stone wall with a wave of her silver wand.

Yuhee’s left shoulder throbbed from the impact, but she kept her feet. She took a step backwards. Her soft buttocks bumped into the edge of the desk. That gave her an idea, but there was no time to put it into action just yet as she was gripped again by an invisible force from Pei’s wand and hurled toward the other side of the room.

This time, Yuhee’s landing was altogether softer, as she landed on the bed amongst the cushions. She lifted her head in time to see a piece of masonry dislodge itself from the balcony outside and fly toward her. She rolled quickly off the other side of the bed and lay on the floor as it flew over her and splintered against the wall with a crack. A small shard struck her ear, but did little damage. She sat up briefly and peered over the bed and through the doors. Pei was still standing in the middle of the balcony, illuminated by a torch on the wall beside her. The breeze made her long black hair curl around her face. She still bore the same smile as during their conversation, but now it had spread: she looked as though she was enjoying herself. Yuhee’s face flushed with anger, just as another flick of the silver wand sent another piece of masonry sailing toward her.

She ducked behind the bed again. This time a fragment ricocheted and grazed her cheek, stinging and drawing a little blood. She tried to stay calm.

“Well if your going to hide in there, I’ll have to come in and get you!” called Pei, her voice sounding slightly excited, as if this were a game. Yuhee could hear her footsteps approach, then deaden as she began to tread on the carpet.

Yuhee was still lying on the floor behind the bed. She focussed on the pile of papers on the desk. They lifted and separated, then whirled like a small tornado. She sat up and was about to send them toward Pei, but Pei already had her wand pointed at the edge of the bed. There was no masonry to hand, but she uttered an incantation and a small ball of fire flew at Yuhee, who had to duck behind the bed to avoid being burned and let the papers fall to the floor.

As soon as Yuhee raised her head again, she saw that Pei had advanced further and was at the foot of the bed, right among the fallen papers. As they flew into the air again, swirling around her, they broke her line of site and for moment she swatted at them with her wand. Then the papers stuck to her, covering all over her body, including over her face. She waved frantically, but couldn’t see and even her arms were plastered with paper. Yuhee focussed harder and the papers burst into flames. She imagined Pei’s face, changing from that self assured smile into what she imagined must by now be terror.

Pei gave a short scream and ran out onto the balcony. She rolled on the stone surface, but still the flaming papers clung to her. Yuhee followed and stood over her. “Have I defeated you?” she asked, cautiously.

The Debt - 28-10-2011 20:08:00

Yuhee panted as she climbed the stone stairs. She hadn’t counted them, but it seemed she had been climbing for an eternity. She wasn’t very fit, either. Her chubby little legs ached and her small but rounded bosom heaved up and down as she hesitated on a small landing.

It was dark outside and she could see her reflection in a small window. Her cheeks were slightly flushed and her neck length black hair was riffled up a little. She waved a short wooden wand over it, whispering a brief incantation and it soon behaved itself. She was almost there and wanted to appear calm and unflappable when she met Pei. She was nervous, but didn’t want to show it.

Once her breathing had subsided, Yuhee summoned all her courage and silently ascended the last few steps, her white silk trousers barely rustling under her green silk robe of three quarter length. She hesitated as she reached the door, then knocked twice.

The sound was muffled, but evidently she had been heard, since the door swung silently open and admitted her into a candle lit room. The stone floor was draped with patterned carpets. To her left was a writing desk covered in scrolls and books. To her right was a cane bed, covered in red silk cushions. She looked around for a moment but then, directly ahead, double doors opened letting in the cool night breeze and between them stood Pei, a lady only slightly taller than Yuhee, but slender and with a proud face, despite her button nose and slightly rounded chin. She was wearing a full length light blue silk robe embroidered with an intricate pattern and walked with a light gait that spoke confidence. Pei looked at Yuhee and her small mouth smiled almost endearingly, but her eyes were cold. “Yuhee. What a pleasant surprise,” she said, then waited expectantly.

Yuhee hesitated, but held Pei’s gaze. “I… have come to ask you to release my brother. He has done you no harm.”

“He owes me money. He will stay here until it is paid,” Pei stated, in a quiet, matter of fact voice. “He has caused damage to my property through his foolishness and he must make amends.”

“How can he? Our family are poor and we are charged so much rent by your aunt, our landlord, that it would take us several lifetimes to save up the money you are demanding from us. He is a good boy and didn’t mean to make trouble. Please, I ask you, have mercy on him and our family.” Yuhee’s voice was steady, but her heart was in her mouth. Her brother’s freedom depended on this conversation. His horse had bolted, causing two cart loads of supplies destined for Pei’s castle to be driven into the river.

“This is the lore. I cannot show mercy on him. Others will learn from his example. I am a member of the royal household and we rule this land because people fear and respect us. You should do the same. Please leave me now. I must go and punish the guards who let you in.”

Yuhee felt a rising sense of dread. The guard who had secretly let her in through the servants’ entrance was a friend of her father. She would not have him punished for helping her. Courage revived itself within her. “They did not let me in. I overpowered one and snuck past the others. Your guards are good men and do not deserve to be punished. Neither does my brother.”

Pei’s eyes rested momentarily on the wand in Yuhee’s hand. “You are a mage then?” she asked.

“I am a sorceress,” she replied. It was almost true. She was learning to be one.

“Perhaps after all there is some deal that can be made between us. You may challenge me. Defeat me in battle and I will allow you to work for me until your brother’s debt is cleared. Don’t worry: I will pay you generously and you may keep some of the spoils of your work for yourself. Your brother may be freed immediately, but I will know where to find him if you fail your duty. Do you wish to challenge me under these conditions?”

Yuhee hesitated. Though the sorcery had come naturally to her since she was a child, it was only a year ago that she had begun to take lessons from her cousin, who was some years older and had studied under a famous wizard, due to a chance meeting some years ago in a far away city. Pei was reputed to be a powerful mage and because she clearly had the wealth to pay for training, there was no reason to doubt her reputation. “What happens if I lose?” asked Yuhee.

“Then I will still allow you to work for me if you wish. You may take your brother’s place and work as a servant until the debt is clear. At the standard rate of pay for a servant here, that would take one hundred and twenty six years, which is the term for which your brother is now contracted. However, if you impress me through loyal service, your pay may increase. That is the offer. What is your decision?”

Yuhee had nothing to lose. She loved her brother and felt she must certainly protect him even if it meant taking his place as a servant. At least challenging Pei would give both of them a chance at freedom within their lifetimes, however slim. She felt terrified. She took a deep breath. “I accept your offer and challenge you. When will this battle begin?”

“We may start immediately. You have your wand and your robes. I have mine. Let us begin.”

With that, she drew a silver wand, finely engraved with runes, from the sleeve of her robe, bowed to Yuhee, then assumed a fighting stance. Yuhee bowed too and held her wand out, trying to think what spells she knew that could defeat a well trained mage. Pei drew out a white silk handkerchief and held it at arms length. “When it hits the floor, we begin.”
